About the Trip

BSU at the Games is a freelance news agency of 41 student journalists from Ball State University who will produce stories, photos, video and graphics from the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Their work will be featured by national news outlets such as WTHR (an NBC affiliate), The Chicago Tribune, CNN, The Colorado Springs Gazette and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association.

BSU at the Games is part of the university’s immersive learning initiative. The group aspires to be a top news outlet for coverage of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games by offering high-quality reporting to national news outlets. These students will gain unparalleled career experience in journalism, telecommunications, photojournalism, public relations and graphic design to begin their professional networks and portfolios.

Student reporters, photographers and videographers will travel to the many Olympic venues throughout Sochi and the surrounding areas in search of behind-the-scenes stories about the sports, people and places of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. A team of 24 will travel to Russia and 17 will remain in the states.

Graphic designers will be stationed in Chicago to work directly with The Chicago Tribune to produce news graphics about the Winter Games.

BSU at the Games work is featured at www.bsuatthegames.com and includes frequently updated stories, graphics, videos and blog posts. To stay up-to-date with the Olympic coverage, follow BSU at the Games on TwitterFacebook and Instagram.

BSU at the Games will use the 2013 fall academic semester to prepare for the trip before attending the Games from Feb. 7 to Feb. 23, 2014. Additionally, a few members spent Sept. 29 through Oct. 2 attending the 2013 Team USA National Media Summit in Park City, Utah.

During their one-week stay, students will stay on cruise ships off the coast of Adler, near the official Olympic competition grounds located in the Coastal Cluster. Sochi is on the coast of the Black Sea, located in southwest Russia.
